Dissonance starts with their second single “Isolation Cycles” which starts off with an ambient guitar effect, followed by Arturo Salas’ vocals. At first, it took me a few songs to get used to how different his vocals sounded compared to what I usually listen to, but it heavily reminded me of Adam Roths from Broken Iris. His melodies are much welcomed to a scene filled with Falsettos and Sopranos.

“Pushing the boundaries of alternative rock, Marila Voe truly set themselves apart from other artists in the same genre. Filled with Interesting melodies, catchy choruses, and colorful riffs these boys have set out to release a refreshing 5-track EP.”

Second impressions of the album went smoothly. However, I did have to listen a few times to absorb their sound, as each playthrough I discovered something different that I have not heard before. I liked the synths going on in the background, and it really set up a vibe that meshed well with their guitar tone/vocals. It heavily reminded me of early Minus the Bear and at times somewhat like Of Machines.

My favorite song off this EP has to be “Deadhorse.” The intro starts with a funky riff, which transitions seamlessly to dual guitars. I feel like they were layered perfectly, again reminding me heavily of early Minus The Bear. The guitar work is definitely at its strongest on this song compared to the others, making this a song I’ll have on repeat for a good while.

Marila Voe, being from San Antonio like myself, and having caught them open up a few times for bands such as Hail The Sun, Icarus The Owl, Good Tiger and more, it’s safe to say these guys have amazing energy and have a vibrant & soulful vibe live. So it was interesting to hear how they sounded in the studio. Working with Mack Damon definitely did them justice. I’m looking forward to seeing Marila Voe grow and evolve, and I’ll definitely be there as they do!

Verdict: 4/5. Solid Groundwork, with lots of potential!
